Solar Panel Installation Documentation UK: What You Need

Quick Answer: What Solar Panel Documents Should I Receive?

After a UK solar panel installation, you should normally have a handover pack containing your system specification, commissioning and test records, operating and maintenance information, manufacturer warranty details and relevant electrical documentation.

For an MCS-certified installation, you should also receive an MCS certificate. The current MCS standard requires the installer to register the commissioned installation and generate the certificate within 10 working days. MCS Certified

Grid-connected systems also need appropriate Distribution Network Operator documentation. Depending on the system, this may involve G98, G99 and, where export limitation is used, G100 requirements. Keep these documents alongside your electrical certificates, warranties, invoice and any Building Regulations or planning evidence applicable to your property.

Solar Panel Installation Documentation UK: What Paperwork Should You Receive?

A solar installation is not complete just because the panels are producing electricity. UK homeowners should also receive a clear set of documents showing what was installed, how it was tested, how it connects to the electricity network and what warranties apply.

For an MCS-certified solar PV installation, the documentation is particularly important. The current MCS Solar PV Installation Standard, MIS 3002 Issue 6.0, requires contractors to assemble a comprehensive document pack and provide key handover information to the customer. The standard became mandatory for MCS solar contractors from 18 June 2026. MCS Certified

This guide explains the solar panel installation documentation UK homeowners should expect, what each document is for, when it should arrive and what to do if something is missing.

If you are still planning your system, our solar panel installation process guide explains what happens before the paperwork stage.

MCS also publishes a dedicated solar PV installer handover checklist covering documents such as commissioning information, manuals, warranty details and system information. MCS Certified

1. Your MCS certificate and MCS handover documents

If you bought an MCS-certified solar installation, the MCS certificate is one of the most important documents to check for.

Under the current MIS 3002 standard, the MCS contractor must register the installation on the MCS Installation Database and generate its MCS certificate no later than 10 working days after commissioning. The certificate should then be sent to the customer for inclusion in the handover pack. MCS Certified

The certificate is not the entire handover pack.

MCS also requires a signed handover document containing information including the customer and installation address, installer details, key components, estimated system performance and recommended interval before the first periodic inspection. MCS Certified

Read our guide to MCS-certified solar installers in the UK if you want to understand what installer certification means before accepting a quotation.

2. Electrical Installation Certificate and Building Regulations paperwork

Solar PV becomes part of your property’s electrical installation, so the electrical work must be properly inspected and tested.

The MCS standard requires solar PV commissioning through a documented procedure and calls for inspection and testing in accordance with its referenced code of practice. Its model verification paperwork records details such as circuits tested, inspection reports, array tests and inverter information. MCS Certified

You should therefore account for the appropriate Electrical Installation Certificate and associated test results for the work undertaken.

Building-control documentation is a separate issue. In England, registered competent-person installers can self-certify qualifying work and, where required, provide evidence of Building Regulations compliance. Government guidance says certificates issued through competent-person arrangements can be used as evidence of compliance and can also appear in property searches. GOV.UK

Do not assume the paperwork is identical throughout the UK. Scotland operates under the Building (Scotland) Regulations and its own technical handbooks, while Northern Ireland has separate Building Regulations administered through councils. Scottish Government

Ask your installer which building-control evidence applies specifically to your property.

3. DNO paperwork: G98, G99 and G100

Your Distribution Network Operator, or DNO, manages the local electricity network. Its paperwork is not the same as your MCS certificate.

For qualifying small generators connected at low voltage with a total capacity of no more than 16A per phase, the G98 process generally allows installation without advance DNO application at a single premises. The installer must then notify the DNO within 28 days of commissioning. Energy Networks

Systems outside that G98 route may require G99 approval before connection. For smaller Type A G99 installations, the ENA guidance describes a connection application followed by a DNO connection offer and subsequent commissioning documentation. Energy Networks

Where the system uses an export-limitation scheme, G100 requirements may also apply. G100 covers systems that control net import or export so an agreed network limit is not exceeded. Energy Networks

Domestic installers can now also use ENA Connect Direct for low-carbon technology applications, so your evidence may include digital application or approval records rather than only traditional paper forms. Energy Networks Connect

Keep the final DNO correspondence with your installation records.

4. Commissioning reports, drawings and system information

The handover should tell a future engineer what was actually installed, rather than simply naming the brand of panel.

Useful records include the system capacity, panel and inverter details, test results, electrical schematic, system layout, performance estimate and relevant equipment data.

MCS’s current model verification documentation records the rated DC capacity, key components, circuits tested, inspection and test references and inverter make, model and serial number. MCS Certified

Your operating information should also explain normal system operation, maintenance and what to do if something goes wrong. Current MCS rules specifically require commissioning forms, maintenance requirements, available maintenance services, manufacturer manuals and warranty information in the document pack. MCS Certified

For more detail on these checks, see our solar PV commissioning process.

5. Product warranties, workmanship cover and your invoice

Keep the warranties for every major component, particularly the solar modules, inverter and battery if one is installed.

Check whether warranty registration requires action from you. Also record model and serial numbers where available. This makes future warranty claims much easier if labels become inaccessible.

Keep the installer’s workmanship warranty separately from manufacturer product warranties. If insurance-backed protection was supplied, retain the policy or guarantee details as well.

Finally, save your contract and final invoice. MCS’s published solar handover checklist includes a paid invoice and insurance-backed warranty details among the handover items. MCS Certified

A practical solar panel installation checklist can help you confirm that physical installation work and documentation have both been completed.

6. Documentation for Smart Export Guarantee payments

If you want to be paid for electricity exported to the grid, documentation becomes commercially important as well.

Ofgem’s latest published SEG annual report states that solar PV installations up to 50kW need to demonstrate suitable certification, normally through an MCS certificate or equivalent. Ofgem’s generator guidance also requires suitable export metering and an export MPAN. Ofgem

Individual SEG suppliers set their own application processes, so they may request further evidence.

Do not confuse the MCS certificate, DNO confirmation and export MPAN. They relate to different parts of the process.

When should solar paperwork arrive?

Stage Documentation to expect
Before installation Contract, system design, performance estimate and relevant G99/DNO approval where required
At commissioning/handover Test records, electrical documents, system details, manuals, warranties and operating instructions
Within 10 working days for MCS installations MCS registration and certificate under current MIS 3002
After relevant DNO processing Final grid-connection/commissioning correspondence and, where applicable, export-related information
Before/while arranging SEG MCS or equivalent certification, export metering/MPAN details and supplier-specific evidence

The key point is that not every certificate necessarily arrives on installation day. However, you should know which documents are outstanding, who is responsible for them and when they are expected.

What if your solar paperwork is missing?

Start by making a written list of what you have and what is absent. Contact the installer and ask for each missing item by name rather than requesting “the solar certificate”.

If an MCS certificate is overdue, remember that the current MCS standard sets a 10-working-day deadline for registration after commissioning. MCS Certified

For DNO records, contact your network operator if the installer cannot provide evidence of the connection process. For Building Regulations evidence, check with the relevant competent-person scheme, building-control body or local authority depending on where you live.

Recent UK solar-owner discussions repeatedly show confusion between MCS certificates, DNO paperwork, Building Regulations evidence and electrical certification. They are separate documents and one should not automatically be treated as a replacement for another. Reddit

Keep your solar documentation for the life of the system

Create both a digital folder and, if practical, a physical handover folder.

Keep the original quote, contract, paid invoice, MCS certificate, electrical certificates, Building Regulations evidence, DNO correspondence, schematic, commissioning sheets, performance estimate, warranties, manuals and any planning or structural information produced for the installation.

These records can become valuable when claiming under a warranty, changing your inverter or battery, arranging electrical work or transferring information to a future owner.

Normally expect system and commissioning records, electrical certification, operating and maintenance instructions, warranty information and relevant DNO documents. An MCS-certified installation should also have its MCS certificate and MCS handover information. MCS Certified

Current MIS 3002 requires the MCS contractor to register the completed installation and generate the MCS certificate within 10 working days of commissioning. MCS Certified

No. MCS relates to certification of the installation under the MCS scheme. DNO paperwork concerns connection to the local electricity distribution network.

Appropriate electrical inspection, testing and certification should form part of a properly completed installation. Solar PV adds fixed electrical equipment to the property, and MCS commissioning includes documented inspection and testing. MCS Certified

It depends on the work and which UK nation the property is in. England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have different building-control frameworks, so confirm the applicable documentation for your installation. GOV.UK

G98 covers qualifying small generators connected at low voltage. For a qualifying single-premises installation, the installer generally notifies the DNO after commissioning and must do so within 28 days. Energy Networks

G99 covers generating equipment outside the relevant G98 route. Depending on the installation, the process involves applying to the DNO and receiving the appropriate connection offer or approval before connection. Energy Networks

G100 sets requirements for customer export or import limitation schemes. It can apply where equipment controls the amount of electricity that can flow through the property's network connection. Energy Networks

For solar PV up to 50kW, Ofgem states that applicants must demonstrate suitable certification, normally through an MCS certificate or equivalent certification. Ofgem

An export MPAN identifies the metering point used for exported electricity. Ofgem's SEG guidance requires eligible generators to have suitable export metering and an export MPAN. Ofgem

For an MCS installation, the current standard requires commissioning forms, maintenance information, manufacturer manuals, warranty details and a signed handover record containing key system information. MCS Certified

A system schematic is extremely useful for maintenance, fault-finding and future alterations. MCS handover guidance includes electrical system information, while the current standard's maintenance provisions also reference system schematics. MCS Certified

Yes. Model and serial-number records can help with warranties and future servicing. MCS's current model PV test report specifically provides for inverter make, model and serial number. MCS Certified

Contact the installer in writing first. If more than 10 working days have passed since commissioning, point to the current MCS registration timescale and ask whether the installation has been registered. MCS Certified

Do not assume so. Under current MCS rules, the certificate is generated when the MCS contractor registers a fully installed and commissioned system. If an installation was never registered, contact MCS for advice on what evidence and options are available. MCS Certified

Expect the battery's own specifications, warranty, operating information and relevant electrical and commissioning records. Battery storage can also change the DNO connection and export-limitation arrangements.

Yes, where they exist. Keep any planning consent, listed-building approval, structural assessment or mounting calculations connected with the installation. The current MCS standard requires roof structural suitability to be assessed and requires a structural engineer in specified circumstances. MCS Certified

A practical approach is to keep it for as long as the system remains installed and pass the relevant records to a future owner. Warranties, servicing, system alterations and export arrangements can all depend on information created years earlier.

Conclusion

Good solar panel installation documentation provides an evidence trail from design and grid connection through testing, commissioning and handover.

For an MCS installation, the handover should be much more substantial than a single certificate. Current MCS rules require a comprehensive document pack, while DNO, electrical and building-control paperwork perform separate functions.

Before treating your installation as finished, check that you can identify what was installed, prove how it was commissioned, find the relevant network documentation and locate every important warranty.

If you are comparing installers, make documentation part of the quotation from the start. Ask exactly what handover pack will be supplied and who will manage the MCS and DNO processes.
