Quick Answer: What Should Be Included in a Solar Panel Handover?
For an MCS-certified solar PV installation, your installer should provide and explain a handover pack covering commissioning records, maintenance requirements, manufacturer manuals and warranty details. The handover information should identify the customer and site, list the main system components, include the estimated system performance and state when the first periodic inspection is recommended. An MCS certificate follows registration of the completed installation on the MCS Installation Database. Keep relevant electrical, building-control and DNO/grid-connection evidence too, plus monitoring access, operating information and any battery documentation.
Solar Panel Installation Handover UK: What You Should Receive Before Sign-Off
A solar panel installation is not complete when the last panel is fixed to the roof. The final stage is the handover. This is when the installer confirms the system has been commissioned, explains how to operate it and provides the documents you may need for warranties, grid records, export payments and a future house sale.
A proper UK solar PV handover should leave you with more than an app login and a promise that certificates will arrive later. You should understand what has been installed, what normal operation looks like, how the system can be isolated and who to contact if something goes wrong.
If you are comparing installers, confirm the handover requirements in writing before work starts. You can compare solar quotations with Get Free Quote based on the complete installation scope rather than headline price alone.
What Is a Solar Panel Installation Handover?
Handover is the point at which the installer finishes commissioning the solar PV system and transfers control of the completed installation to you.
It is different from commissioning. Commissioning is the technical process of inspecting, testing and setting the installation to work. Handover follows that work and combines the paperwork with a practical explanation of the finished system.
The current MCS Solar PV Installation Standard (MIS 3002 Issue 6.0) requires MCS contractors to commission installations using a documented procedure. They must also assemble a comprehensive document pack and explain the handover information to the customer. MCS Certified
A system can therefore be producing electricity while some administrative steps are still being completed. For the wider sequence from survey to switch-on, see the solar panel installation process guide. For the testing stage itself, see the solar PV commissioning process guide.
Solar Panel Handover Checklist: Documents to Keep
| Document or information | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Signed handover information | Records the customer, site, installer, main equipment, performance estimate and inspection recommendation. |
| Commissioning and test records | Provides evidence that the system was inspected and tested at commissioning. |
| System schematic | Helps future electricians and solar engineers understand how the installation is connected. |
| Manufacturer manuals and datasheets | Covers operation, technical limits, fault information and equipment specifications. |
| Product and workmanship warranties | Shows what is covered, how long protection lasts and how to make a claim. |
| MCS certificate | Provides evidence of an MCS-certified installation and is commonly useful for export-tariff applications. |
| Electrical certification | Records the relevant inspection and testing of the electrical work. |
| Building-control evidence | Helps demonstrate that applicable building requirements have been addressed. |
| DNO G98/G99 records | Provides evidence of the relevant grid-connection process. |
| Monitoring details | Gives you access to generation and, where fitted, battery and grid-flow information. |
Keep your final quotation, contract and paid invoice with these records. It is also useful to retain the make, model and serial number of the inverter, panels and battery.
When Should You Receive Your MCS Certificate?
An MCS certificate for solar PV is produced after the completed system has been registered.
Under MIS 3002 Issue 6.0, the installer must register the installation on the MCS Installation Database and generate the certificate no later than 10 working days after commissioning. The certificate is then sent to the customer for inclusion in the handover documentation. MCS Certified
This means the physical handover and every final document may not arrive at exactly the same time. However, your installer should explain which documents remain outstanding and when to expect them.
If MCS certification formed part of your quotation, ask for the installer’s certification details and a clear timetable for anything missing. The guide to MCS-certified solar installers explains what to verify when choosing an installer.
Electrical and Building Regulations Paperwork
Solar PV is an electrical installation as well as a roof-mounted energy system. Keep the appropriate electrical inspection and certification supplied for the work.
Building-control arrangements depend on where the property is located. In England and Wales, installers registered with an appropriate competent person scheme can self-certify relevant work rather than requiring the homeowner to make a separate application.
According to GOV.UK competent person scheme guidance, a registered installer handles the required notification to the local authority and should provide the customer with the relevant compliance certificate within eight weeks of completing the work. GOV.UK
Scotland and Northern Ireland have different building-control systems. Ask the installer which process applies to your property and what evidence you should retain.
An MCS certificate should not be treated as a replacement for every other compliance document.
G98, G99 and DNO Handover Documents
Your Distribution Network Operator, or DNO, manages the local electricity distribution network. Solar PV that operates in parallel with that network has to follow the appropriate connection process.
In Great Britain, G98 covers fully type-tested microgenerators within the G98 limit of up to 16 amps per phase. ENA Engineering The current ENA Distributed Generation Connection Guide says that, for a G98 installation, the installer must notify the DNO within 28 days of commissioning and provide the required installation information. SP Energy Networks
Projects outside the G98 route generally follow G99. The exact application, approval, testing and commissioning requirements depend on the generator classification and system design. For larger G99 installations, the ENA guidance includes detailed pre-commissioning liaison and commissioning submissions to the DNO. SP Energy Networks
At handover, ask for the relevant DNO correspondence rather than relying on a verbal statement that the connection paperwork has been completed.
Northern Ireland has separate G98/NI and G99/NI requirements. ENA Engineering
What Should Your Installer Show You Before Leaving?
A useful handover involves a practical demonstration rather than simply emailing a folder of PDFs.
Before the installation is signed off, make sure you understand:
- How to recognise normal inverter operation and check current generation.
- Where the relevant isolators are and how the documented shutdown and restart procedure works.
- How to access the monitoring app or online portal through an account you control.
- What common warnings or fault messages mean.
- Who to contact if the system stops working.
- What maintenance or visual checks the manufacturer recommends.
- Which warranties apply to the panels, inverter, mounting equipment, battery and workmanship.
Check that the installed equipment matches your final agreed specification. Where an approved substitution has been made, the handover documents should identify the equipment actually fitted.
For a wider practical sign-off process, use the solar panel installation checklist.
What Happens After the Solar Handover?
Once commissioning is complete, you can use the electricity your solar panels generate. Getting paid for exported electricity is a separate process.
In Great Britain, the Smart Export Guarantee, or SEG, enables eligible small-scale generators to receive payments for qualifying electricity exported to the grid.
Ofgem says an eligible installation needs suitable certification and an export meter. The SEG process also requires an export MPAN. For solar PV systems up to 50 kW, an MCS certificate or equivalent evidence can be used to demonstrate suitable certification. Ofgem
You must apply to a SEG licensee; payments do not begin automatically simply because your solar panels are exporting. Tariffs also vary between suppliers. Ofgem’s Smart Export Guarantee guidance for generators explains the application framework. Ofgem
SEG does not operate in Northern Ireland. Energy Saving Trust
What If Your Handover Paperwork Is Missing or Late?
First, make a written list of everything you have received and everything still missing. Ask the installer to confirm a delivery date for each outstanding item.
If your MCS certificate has not arrived after the solar-specific registration period, ask whether the installation has been registered on the MCS database.
For missing DNO records, contact your network operator with your address, MPAN and installation information and ask what notification or approval it holds.
If building-control evidence is missing in England or Wales, establish which competent person scheme was used. For missing warranty documents, record your equipment model and serial numbers before contacting the installer or manufacturer.
MCS certification, electrical certification, building-control evidence and DNO paperwork serve different purposes. One document does not automatically replace another.
Does a Solar Battery Change the Handover?
Yes. If you have battery storage, the handover should accurately cover the battery as well as the solar panels.
Keep its model details, warranty, operating instructions, monitoring access and shutdown information. Make sure you understand how the battery interacts with the inverter and grid.
Ask specifically what happens during a power cut. A standard grid-connected solar or battery system does not necessarily provide backup electricity unless suitable backup equipment and controls have been designed into the installation.
If the system uses an export limitation, retain the relevant settings and grid-connection records.
Keep Your Solar Handover Pack for the Life of the System
Handover paperwork can become important long after installation day.
You may need it when applying for export payments, making a warranty claim, arranging repairs, transferring monitoring access or selling the property.
A future electrician, roofer or solar engineer will also have a much clearer starting point if the original equipment information, schematic and test records remain available.

It is the final transfer of the completed solar PV installation from the installer to the customer. It normally combines documentation, commissioning information and an explanation of how to operate and monitor the system.
For an MCS installation, expect commissioning information, manufacturer manuals, warranty details and formal handover information. Also retain relevant MCS, electrical, building-control and DNO paperwork.
Under the current solar-specific MCS standard, the installer must register the installation and generate the MCS certificate no later than 10 working days after commissioning. MCS Certified
No. The MCS certificate is one document. The handover pack is broader and contains information about commissioning, equipment, warranties, maintenance and system operation. MCS Certified
You should retain evidence relevant to the G98 or G99 connection route used for your installation. This can be useful if questions arise later about the system's grid connection.
In Great Britain, G98 covers fully type-tested microgenerators within its specified limits, including the 16 A-per-phase threshold. Installations outside the G98 route generally follow G99 requirements. ENA Engineering
The ENA's March 2026 connection guide states that the installer must notify the DNO within 28 days of commissioning the G98 generating unit. SP Energy Networks
You should retain the appropriate inspection, testing and certification supplied for the electrical work carried out. The precise documentation depends on the installation and applicable compliance route.
Where an appropriate competent person scheme is used in England or Wales, GOV.UK says the installer should provide the relevant compliance certificate within eight weeks. Different arrangements apply elsewhere in the UK. GOV.UK
Ofgem permits suitable certification, with MCS being a recognised route for qualifying solar PV systems up to 50 kW. Equivalent certification may also be accepted under the SEG framework. Ofgem
No. You need to apply to a participating SEG licensee and meet its application requirements. Ofgem
Yes. Ofgem's generator guidance states that exported electricity must be metered and the export meter requires an export MPAN. Ofgem
It helps future electricians, solar engineers and other contractors understand the layout and electrical connections without having to reconstruct the original installation design.
Keep the battery model, warranty, operating and shutdown instructions, monitoring access and relevant grid documentation. You should also understand whether the installation provides backup power during an outage.
Ask for a written list and timetable for all missing documents. Depending on what is missing, you may then need to check with MCS, your DNO, the relevant competent person scheme, building control or the equipment manufacturer.
Conclusion
A good solar panel installation handover provides three things: proof, control and clarity.
You should have evidence that the system was commissioned, the important documents needed for future compliance and export questions, and enough information to understand normal operation.
Before signing the project off, check what you have received, identify anything still outstanding and establish when it will arrive. When comparing solar installers, assess their certification, grid paperwork, warranties and handover process as carefully as the panels and price.
